Jan’s working career started in the corporate world, followed by a period with local government. Having been a JP (Justice of Peace) for a number of years, she was often approached by couples, asking her to marry them, but without official appointment she was not able to. Ten years ago, however, Jan decided to take the step and apply to become a civil celebrant and her rewarding journey began.

Her mentor Gail Brigden, helped her choose the very appropriate business name - Ceremonies with Style. And indeed Jan, lives up to that. For her, it is a privilege to share in the celebration , be it a wedding, renewal of vows, commitment ceremony, baby naming or the passing of a loved one.

Jan’s happy customers come from all walks of life including celebrities such as Sandra Sully. Visit the Ceremonies with Style website and you will find dozens of testimonials from happy clients. Notes of gratitude such as these are common

Jan provided us with clear guidance and made us feel extremely comfortable with our decisions on how we wished to hold our ceremony. We changed our minds a few times on how to run the ceremony, from eloping to doing it on a boat with only 4 people to moving it all together to our home with 30 guests. Jan was incredibly patient and supportive of our decision and made us both feel relaxed and at eas. She offered support and guidance at all times when the wedding stress crept in Jan made us feel extremely comfortable with how we wished to run our ceremony and at no times enforced her own views or opinions of how it should be on us. Jan was sincere and warm and we loved having her marry us. Many thanks

Not only an exceptional celebrant, but also a business savvy entrepreneur, here is what Jan shared about running her business.

Q. What kind of online and offline marketing do you do and which is working for you?

My website attracts good traffic and I also use Facebook to share information. I attend quite a few network meetings especially on the northern beaches, where I’m located.

Q. Do you use social media as part of your marketing mix?

I have done a number of courses on social media, but other than Facebook, I don't really use it. I prefer face to face contact.

Q. How many hours a week do you work in your business?

Around 35-40 hours

Q. What mistakes have you made in running your business and what lessons have you learnt from those?

I think you learn as you go. Not everybody is reliable and a celebrant is often the last person on the list to find out about changes to a ceremony.

Q. What obstacles or challenges are you facing at the moment?

Managing all the things I like to do and making sure my clients are well looked after….before…during the process and after.

Q. Are you able to take time off work to go on holidays? If so, how often?

This has to be planned well in advance usually 12 months out .. maybe for 2 weeks.

Q. What is the most rewarding part of running your own business?

Flexibility to play golf when I can.

Q. Any other comments / points you would like to share about running your business?

Be aware of your time and costs ... sometimes things can run away from you.

Jan’s website is filled with useful information for brides and grooms. You will find plenty of great tips and resources, which will help you plan your perfect wedding or organise a special ceremony.
