If your passion in life is sailing, but you never thought you could make a living from your intense interest, try taking a look at Tom Whidden. This professional sailor and sailmaker is an example of someone who has taken their love of taking to the water to center stage, and he now enjoys the rewards from using his passion to propel himself forward. Whidden used his inspiration from sailing to motivate himself to strive for success through sailing.

A Bio of Whidden and His Dreams

Tom Whidden began sailing when he was ten years old, which led to his many years of experience in yachts and boating. At the age of sixteen, Whidden decided that his passion and dream in life was to become a sailmaker and race in one of the most prestigious sailing races, Americas Cup. That inspiration continued to push him forward in his endeavors. By keeping his eye on the prize, obstacles were not able to keep him down for long.

By starting small, Whidden was able to work himself up to become one of the most reputable sailors today. Of course, Whidden was inspired by various figures throughout his life and sailing career. It is important to have something or someone to admire and aspire to. For Whidden, he began sailing as a junior sailor, talking and sharing experiences with other, more mature sailors. This instilled in him what it takes to make it in the sailing world.

Whidden later joined a Yacht and Sailing club and became President of the organization. He dedicated his life to sailing, and the results show that it was well worth it. Whidden keeps in mind that collaborating with others is a huge part of achieving your dreams and success. Today, Whidden is CEO of NorthSails, and works together with a team of others who are passionate and qualified in sailing. He was initially inspired by the act of sailing, and became motivated by other like-minded people to continue doing it.

Inspiration and Motivation

So inspiration and motivation are essentially one and the same, right? Actually, there is a profound difference. Look at Whidden – he was inspired by sailing. He loved being on the water, feeling the wind on his face, carrying out the maneuvers to steer the boat. That is inspiration. No one was pushing him to sail, he simply felt compelled to do it! Now motivation is when you feel urged to do something. Whidden was motivated by other sailors to continue pursuing his passion. He saw the things more experienced sailors were doing and felt the push to excel like them. His inspiration led him to become motivated to surpass expectations. And he did.

Stay inspired and remember that Whidden is only one of the many people who have made their dreams work for them. If the primary love for sailing is there, you can become motivated to push yourself to the next level to make achieving your dreams a venture of smooth sailing
